arbter-06.jpgSILVER CROSS understands there is more to being a socially responsible company than simply selling products. SILVER CROSS firmly believes in the importance of helping those in need. Companies in the healthcare industry tend to have customers with even greater needs than the average consumer, and healthcare costs have consistently risen faster than inflation in recent years. From their informative blog to their financing information, SILVER CROSS understands their social obligation and is taking steps to do their part in making the world a better place. Nevertheless, SILVER CROSS knows they must do more.

On virtually every university campus in the United States and Canada you will see students in wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Often times these students are taking out loans and working low-paying jobs in an effort to get ahead despite their physical challenges. Every dollar in aid these students receive can make a substantial impact on their lives. There is no doubt that they need our help!

This program will enable students who otherwise would not be able to afford attending a higher learning institution the ability to do so.  SILVER CROSS hopes that by setting an example in the corporate community, other companies will feel compelled to join them with similar programs. You can help them help those most in need by sharing this program with everyone you know!

The program is open to all students in the United States and Canada currently enrolled and in good standing with an undergraduate or graduate program. The only requirements are a 3.0 GPA and the use of a mobility device (wheelchair or scooter) and a citizen of either the USA or Canada. These requirements are to ensure that the scholarship will be given to a driven student with genuine need. Students are also asked to write an essay on the following question: “What goals have you set for your career and future life and what is your source of inspiration to conquer your perceived challenges in achieving these goals?” SILVER CROSS hopes their scholarship will inspire more than just the recipients of the award by encouraging those with physical challenges to think about their lives and what they wish to accomplish.

College/university tuition has risen dramatically over the last two decades, and with it student debt. According to a report by the Institute for College Access and Success, the average student debt has tripled from $8,200 at graduation in 1990 to an average of $25,250 in 2010. This means it is more important than ever for students to find alternative ways to pay for their education. Anything that can be done to ease the added burden disabled students have to overcome is a worthwhile endeavor. One of the best ways to do this is by reducing the amount of debt incurred by replacing some of the debt money with scholarship money.

SILVER CROSS is proud to be a responsible corporate member of the community, and hopes their program will encourage physically challenged students who have completed a minimum of one year of college/university and who are enrolled to finish their degrees. If anyone you know might benefit from this program, let them know! Students interested in the program can fill out the application form here.

The scholarship will be awarded to one student in the United States and one student in Canada. Each recipient will receive $3000, which can be used for tuition and books, or any other education related expense they incur. The deadline for students to submit their applications is December 31st, 2013.Male college student in wheelchair at library

A college/university degree is one of the best ways to increase one’s socioeconomic standing. According to a study by Pew Research, college graduates will make on average over $650,000 more than their non-graduating counterparts over the course of their careers. There is no reason why individuals with mobility challenges should be prevented from getting a degree and becoming happy and productive members of society. We should all follow in the footsteps SILVER CROSS is laying out by doing everything we can to encourage the physically challenged to succeed. Even if you personally don’t know anyone that could benefit from this program, you should still share it with your friends and family. Getting an education is critical to success, and they might be able to share it with someone who would benefit!

In addition to the Ability Achievement Scholarship, SILVER CROSS also offers financing and funding information for those in need of their health care products. Their product line includes wheelchairs and scooters as well as stair lifts, walk-in bathtubs, and other home healthcare equipment.
