Very interesting article in the Toronto Star on Saturday, November 18th names “After the Fall.” Key fact is that almost half of all injury-related deaths among seniors in Canada were caused by falls. The Public Health Agency of Canada estimates one in three people older than 65 will fall at least once a year, a rate that increases to one in two for people over the age of 80.
SILVER CROSS takes our role in the process of assisting seniors in staying safe in their own homes as they age extremely seriously. Stair lifts and related products are one of the key solutions provided by SILVER CROSS across North America. Falling down a stairway is something that should be avoided at all costs. Recycling stair lifts just makes sense.
Phyllis Diller Installs Stair LIft
SILVER CROSS installed a stair lift for Phyllis Diller who is an American actress and comedienne.
She created a stage persona of a wild-haired, eccentrically-dressed housewife who makes jokes about a husband named “Fang” while smoking from a long cigarette holder. Diller is credited with opening the doors of stand-up comedy to women.
In the words of the local rep….
“We got a tour of all her artwork, saw her joke catalog (about 25,000 jokes all filed and cross filed on index cards), her wig and performance dress closet, with about 30 wigs and maybe 200 costumes. Some of these were so heavy with sequins and stuff they weighed about 20-25 lb. And she is only about 5′ tall.”
Many famous people have had a stair lifts installed. Simply put, just because someone is famous does not exclude them from the needs for products like stair lifts.
What are People Really Wanting When Searching for a Stair Lift
People looking for a stair lift are wanting a few simple things from a local representative. First, they want fast, good information. Second, they want to be treated with respect by a friendly, compassionate, knowledgeable company. Third, they want a fair price for the product and service offered.

Height of Stair Lift User
Tall stair lift users must also consider the distance from the the seat to the foot plate so that they are comfortable in riding the chair lift. Also, if a the person is tall, then the stairway width maybe an issue if less than 36″ wide.
2. Lower Back Pain – Another concern is if the stair lift user has lower back pain, then a soft start and stop would be more important.
3. Ability to Bend Knees - If the user can not bend their knees then the width of the stairway is extremely important.
