Self Installed Lifts

Ten years ago, all lifts were installed by trained dealers approved by manufacturers to represent their products.

With the proliferation of the web, end users gained access to more options for self installation.

The first product that was offered as a self installed lift was a stair lift. Now, dumbwaiters, ceiling lifts, and wheelchair porch lifts are also being offered as self-installed lifts.

About 10% of all stair lifts are now being self installed by customers. This percentage is less with the other lifts due to more complicated installations.

It is important to know which manufacturers allow self installation because your WARRANTY WILL BE VOID if they do not allow for self installation of their lifts.

Self Installed Stair Lifts

Some stair lift manufacturers will not permit homeowners to install their own stair lift. They insist that a qualified, trained dealer installs the stair lift. These manufacturers are Sterling, Bruno, Stannah, MediTek and Savaria.

Others stair lift manufacturers have permited self installed stair lifts. They are TK Access, Acorn and Summit Stair Lifts. Ameriglide Stairlifts is actually a Summit Stair Lift with a few alterations. Brooks Stairlifts is an Acorn Stair Lift with again some modifications.

At this time, no stair lift manufacturer offers a self installed curved stair lift.

Self Installed Ceiling Lifts

BHM Medical will allow self installation. Having said that, they are moving towards only dealers being allowed to install their lifts. This is mainly due to liability concerns. All other ceiling lift suppliers do not allow self installation. Learn more about self installed ceiling lifts.

Self Installed Wheelchair Porch Lifts

Trust-T-Lift out of Canada and Harmar Mobility in the USA are the two manufacturers that permit self installation. All others do not allow self installation of their lifts at this time.

Self Installed Dumbwaiter

Summit lifts permits self installed dumbwaiters. Ameriglide is a Summit dumbwaiter. Matot, Waupaca, Butler and Inclinator do not permit self installed dumbwaiters. Find out more about self installed dumbwaiters.
